 UCLA and Los Angeles

The University of California, Los Angeles-the only top-ranked campus founded in the 20th Century-is world renowned for its excellent academic programs. Students come from all 50 states and many foreign countries to study here. The vibrant intellectual community and the opportunity to interact with individuals from a broad range of cultural backgrounds enriches the educational experience within the Department of Earth and Space Sciences.

The UCLA campus, situated on a lushly landscaped 419-acre site in the Westwood area, is one of the most beautiful urban university settings in the nation. Surrounded by upscale neighborhoods, the campus ambience is also enhanced by features like the inverted fountain, the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, and the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden.

Southern California provides an unparalleled site for studying geology and the space sciences. UCLA is freeway close to several of the nation's centers for planetary exploration, like the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Aerospace Corporation. It is an easy drive to the sea, to deserts, to large (and growing) mountain ranges, and to the San Andreas Fault. Located five miles from the Pacific Ocean, at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains, UCLA enjoys a Mediterranean climate moderated by ocean breezes; on a mild winter day, you can come down from a morning of sking in the mountains to enjoy a pleasant afternoon at the beach!

The UCLA Recreation Center offers extensive facilities for athletic pursuits like swimming, tennis, racketball, squash, basketball, weight training, aerobics, and more. If you're more into spectator sports, you will enjoy watching UCLA's renowned football Bruins at the Rosebowl and basketball Bruins at Pauley Pavilion, as well as the full range of intercollegiate sports programs, including gymnastics, volleyball, baseball, and swimming.

The UCLA Center for the Performing Arts, the Fowler Museum of Cultural History, UCLA Hammer Museum, and the Geffen Playhouse, make UCLA a leading arts and culture center. A wide array of programming is offered-everything from the ancient to the avant-garde in film, stage, music, dance, visual art, and multi-media. The movie theaters in Westwood host many movie premieres, and Los Angeles offers all the cultural attractions and excitement one expects in a major city. There are art museums like the LA County Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Huntington Museum, and the Norton Simon Museum . . . great live performances by famous artists in venues like the Hollywood Bowl . . . live theater that runs the gamut from small, intimate shows to major "Boadway" type productions . . . the Dodgers and the Lakers . . . and every kind of restaurant imaginable. "LA is the place!"
