Lectures: Tuesday and Thursday, 11:00am – 12:15pm, Room: Moore 100
Lectures will be augmented by the text. You are responsible for all lecture material assigned from the text. Lectures will be placed on the course website before being given. All cell phones must be turned off during lecture.

Reading: The text for this course is Oceanography: An Invitation to Marine Science, 5th edition (2006), by T. Garrison. It is on sale in the bookstore in Ackerman. Four copies are on reserve in the College Library. For greater detail, the Open University Oceanography Series is also on reserve in the College Library.

Laboratories: Lab section attendance is required: Five (5) labs must be attended to complete the course. All seven (7) lab grades count to your final grade. See the Class Schedule (www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/) for section days and times. All sections meet in 3820 Geology. Reading materials for lab sections are online on the the course website and must be read in advance. Lab sections will provide the opportunity to apply concepts learned in class, and will also cover new material not presented in lecture. TAs may excuse students from attending at most two (2) labs, but all missed work must be made up in a different lab section that is run by that same TA. Each lab will be initiated with a 15-20 minute quiz based on the previous week’s lab material. Students arriving more than 5 minutes late to lab will not receive a quiz.

Grading: Exams will consist of multiple-choice and short answer questions drawn from the lectures, reading assignments and lab sections. Multiple choice sections will use SCANTRON forms. All students must bring a number 2 pencil to the exams and a valid student ID. The final exam is cumulative, encompassing all material addressed during the quarter. The course grade is determined based 10% on the first lecture exam, 20% on the second lecture exam, 35% on the final exam score, 35% on lab section. The grade in lab section are based on weekly quizzes (21%) and a lab section final (14%) that is given in lab during the last week of classes. If you cannot attend an exam because of an unavoidable scheduling conflict, you must make arrangements with the instructor ahead of time. Furthermore, make-ups for missed exams are given only to those with verifiable conflicts. Make-ups will not be given for missed lab quizzes.

Review Sessions: A 2-hour review session will be given before each lecture exam and the final exam. Locations to be announced.

Final Exam: March 20th, 11:30am - 2:30pm, Location are to be determined (TBA).

Extra Credit Activities:

Field Trips: Optional 1/2 day cruises on UCLA's Sea World R/V. See http://www.ioe.ucla.edu/seaworld/. A two-page write up of the field trip, submitted to "Turn It In" and delivered as hardcopy to your lab section TA, will be worth 1 point of extra credit. Content and writing style count. These write-ups may be turned in no later than March 16th.

These write-ups are to be turned in to your lab section TA and submitted to "TurnItIn." Movies on reserve this quarter are "Continents Adrift: A Study of the Scientific Method", "Condition Black," ("The Earth and Moon" plus "Ocean Tides: The Bay of Fundy") and "Under Antarctic Ice".
