 Undergraduate Academic Counseling

The Earth and Space Sciences Counseling Office provides both scheduled and walk-in conseling to Geology/Geophysics majors and potential majors. You do not have to be enrolled in one of our classes to see the counselor. Our office, 3683A Geology, is open Monday - Friday, 8:00-12:00 & 1:00-5:00. The Counselor is available to discuss any questions you may have regarding courses and regulations; her phone number is (310) 825-3917. The Undergraduate Advisor can help you with academic-related questions such as course substitutions.

 Changing your major

To petition for a change of major, drop by the E&SS Counseling Office to fill out a form. Please bring a copy of your UCLA transcript and transfer credits, if applicable.

 Planning your class schedule

A fifteen-minute session with the Counselor will provide you with a tentative class schedule for the duration of your undergraduate career. Many of our courses are offered in sequence and only once a year; proper planning is necessary to avoid taking an extra year to achieve your degree.

 Independent Research (ESS 199)

Students at the Junior and Senior levels may pursue an independent research project under the guidance of an ESS Department faculty member. The student and advisor agree on a project before the beginning of the Quarter and complete a 199 form (available in the Counseling Office). Working on an independent research project can be rewarding and fun. Units count toward upper division requirements; also, research experience is particularly valuable if you plan to go on to graduate school and can result in useful letters of recommendation from the professors involved.

 Scholarships/Awards

Several small scholarships are available each year to our outstanding undergraduate students who have attained Junior or Senior standing. These awards are made by the Undergraduate Scholarship Committee, in recognition of academic achievement. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, we are also able to offer scholarships to many of our students taking the Summer Field courses.

 Other Counseling Services

Registration packets for Geology/Geophysics majors are available each quarter in the Counseling Office. Take advantage of this opportunity to have a periodic Degree Check to avoid any pre-graduation surprises, and make sure any necessary petitions are processed for you. The Counselor is also available to assist you with a variety of problems, both academic and personal, and will be glad to refer you to other sources of help when necessary.
