Computer Lab Rules |
 |
The following lab rules are strictly enforced at ALL times
- This lab is exclusively for the use of students, faculty, and staff of UCLA, and primarily for instructional computing and student research in he Earth and Space Sciences Department. The permitted uses, in priority order are:
- Scheduled meeting of ESS classes. (Highest priority)
- Setup and maintenance by ESS staff and faculty.
- Homework and study for ESS classes.
- UCLA student, ESS faculty, and sponsored-visitor research on ESS subjects.
- Other uses by students, staff and faculty of ESS.
- Other uses by registered UCLA students only. (Lowest priority)
- Lower-priority users must log off and give way to higher-priority users when requested.
- All users must show a valid BruinCard when requested.
- All printing must be recorded in the "Laser Printer Log" and recharged to a valid ESS account that you are authorized to use. (Student in ESS classes: Ask your instructor for the account number. Sign in with your name as well as class number.)
- Do not remove any equipment or manuals from the lab without permission.
- Do not reconfigure the operating systems, network, or cables without permission.
- Do not take or transmit copies of any commercial software without permission.
- Do not download files from an unknown source onto lab computers.
- Transmission of unauthorized music or media files is prohibited.
- Do not save personal files or data on lab computers. Files are removed from lab computers periodically without notice.
- Never copy from another user's files without getting permission and giving attribution. Penalties for plagiarism and/or academic cheating may include dismissal from UCLA.
- Obey all California and federal laws, which prohibit hacking, trashing, snooping, lurking, and accessing obscene materials from computers in schools.
- Read and comply with the ESS departmental e-mail and computer account policies.
- No food or drink is allowed in the computer lab.
- Keep lab area clean at all times.
- Excessive noise in the computer lab is prohibited.
- Be courteous to other lab users.
- Keep the door closed at all times during evenings (after 5 p.m.), nights, weekends, and holidays. Do not open it for strangers who knock. (Valid users should have the lock combination.).
- Report any computer problems to Lab Manager immediately.
- Violators of these rules may lose their access privileges and/or files, maybe be responsible for monetary damages including administrator's salaries for repairs, and may face University discipline and/or criminal prosecution.
- Abuse and misuse of lab privileges will result in enforcement of stricter lab rules.
- You are hereby notified that ESS lab administrators may monitor activity and inspect files in this lab at any time in order to detect violations of these rules.
Violation and abuse of these conditions may result in cancellation of your account and removal of files from the Department server(s). Actions in violations of University policy or any state or federal laws will be referred to the appropriate authority.
