Individual Computer Account
Terms and Conditions

Initial login to your ESS Computer account in the computer lab represents acceptance of the following conditions of usage:

  1. You are granted an individual account on the network and disk space on the server and/or workstation. This account may not be shared with others.
  2. You are responsible for safeguarding your password. DO NOT share it with anyone.
    • When you first login you will be asked to create a new password.
    • Your password should be six (6) to ten (10) characters long.
    • Your password must contain letters AND non-alphabetic characters.
    • No System Administrator will ever ask you for your password (either by phone, in person, or in writing). Do not give your password to anyone.
  3. Disk limit is 10MB per account.
    • Authorization for additional disk space may be granted upon request.
    • Additional space may be used without authorization temporarily for up to four (4) days.
  4. When finished using a computer, users must LOGOFF from the system.
    • Leaving your computer logged on gives others access to your files, e-mails, as well as your print privileges for which you will be responsible.
    • You will be logged off from the system after an extended period of time. All unsaved work will be erased.
  5. Your account may not be used for commercial or illegal purposes.
  6. No modifications are to be made to publicly available files.
  7. No software applications may be placed in publicly accessible disk space without express authorization of the system administrators.
  8. Personal software may be installed in your private disk area with the permission of the lab manager. It is your responsibility to make sure that the software is installed within the terms of the license agreement.
  9. For purpose of system performance, security, or maintenance, system administrators may, at any time and without prior notification, cancel any process, print or executable, running on a department system. Efforts will be made to notify the owner in advance as circumstances permit.
  10. For purpose of system performance, security, or maintenance, and compliance with these terms and conditions, system administrators may monitor account usage and files systems within the limits of the UC privacy policy. Auditing is active on all machines.
  11. Disk mirroring and weekly system backups provide some redundancy. However you should maintain and regularly backup your personal files.
  12. Record ALL your printing on "Laser Printer Log" sheets located by the printers. List the appropriate class, research, or personal account to be charged. (Auditing of printing will be compared with written charges to ensure compliance).
  13. DO NOT give out lab door combination to anyone
    • Carry your building pass and BruinCard with you at all times.
    • For your safety, do not open the door to anyone.
  14. DO NOT remove any equipment, manual, or other resources from the computer lab without permission. Attempting to do so constitutes burglary under California law and will be prosecuted.
  15. Unauthorized modification, or attempted modification of operating systems or system areas, unauthorized entry, or attempted entry, into other peoples' disk space, or unauthorized modification of hardware may result in the IMMEDIATE DEACTIVATION OF YOUR ACCOUNT AND LOSS OF ACCESS TO THE DEPARTMENT COMPUTER LAB.
  16. COURTESY! Please be courteous of others using this lab.
    • Use headphones when listening to music, audio, video files, etc.
    • Please refrain from strong scents, perfumes, colognes, food, etc.
    • Do not leave a mess. Please trash discarded papers, newspapers, wrappers, etc.
  17. Report all complaints and/or suspected unauthorized used of resources to Lab Manager (Geology 4691A) immediately.

Violation and abuse of these conditions may result in cancellation of your account and removal of files from the Department server(s). Actions in violations of University policy or any state or federal laws will be referred to the appropriate authority.
